Dr. Balachandran has been an Associate Professor of Mechanical
Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, since August
1998.  He held the position of an Assistant Professor from August 1993
to August 1998.  Prior to coming to College Park, Dr. Balachandran
worked as a Research Associate in the Department of Engineering Science 
and Mechanics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI&SU), 
Blacksburg, Virginia from January 1991 to August 1993.  From January 1987 to
December 1990, under the guidance of Professor Ali Nayfeh of VPI&SU,
he pursued his doctoral studies in the area of Nonlinear Dynamics of
Structures.  Dr. Balachandran's current research activities can be 
grouped under the broad umbrella of "Dynamics and Control of Systems".
