WHAT: The public is invited to submit names for a new "desktop supercomputer" invented by Uzi Vishkin, a professor of computer engineering at the University of Maryland's A. James Clark School of Engineering. The technology will allow desktop computers to operate at speeds 100 times faster than today's models thanks to the use of parallel computing on a single chip.

Prof. Vishkin will pick the winning name, which he says should reflect the features and bold aspirations of the new machine and its parallel computing capabilities.

The winning entry will earn the submitter $500 and the distinction of having named this advance in computing technology.

For more information on the invention, please see the full press release.

WHO: U.S. residents 18 years of age and over may enter the contest. The full contest rules and restrictions are available online: http://www.ece.umd.edu/supercomputer/rules.php

HOW: Entries must be submitted online at http://www.ece.umd.edu/supercomputer

WHEN: The deadline to enter is September 15, 2007.

RULES: For the complete set of contest rules, please visit the contest website: http://www.ece.umd.edu/supercomputer/rules.php
